EFCE 'Perspectives' Survey

The web-based survey which explored opinions of chemical engineers across Europe took place last winter. By the time we came to look at the data in March, we had nearly 1800 responses which give a fascinating insight into what our members think. For example, we are very happy with our choice of profession - "chemical engineering is the right career for me" (83% agree), though we are slightly less content with the job market - "there are good opportunities for chemical engineers in my country" (70% agree). Perhaps this explains our willingness to be mobile: 36% agreed that "I may be working in another country in 5 years' time". There was overwhelming support for the move towards less reliance on fossil fuels, though a surprising 58% of respondents agreed that they needed more information to understand energy and climate issues. A significant minority (34%) felt "my future lies in bioprocess engineering", with 36% agreeing that "bioscience is important in my current role". Given the huge importance of the bio-d imension, the EFCE is delighted to see the close co-operation with applied biotechnologists under-pinning the joint conference planned for Berlin this September (see below - ECCE8/1st ECAB).

We are now looking at the Perspectives Survey data in more detail, to see how strategy can be developed, with our member societies, responding to people's views. There will be an opportunity to discuss this at an EFCE Forum at the Berlin Conference. Further preliminary analysis of the Survey results is at http://www.efce.info/Activities/_Perspectives_+Survey.html

Thanks to all who took part in the survey for sharing your views!

Science and Technology

Blazing a trail for process safety
The European Process Safety Centre and the EFCE Loss Prevention Working Party have pro-duced an education package entitled Process Safety Pays which helps to get the vital message across to senior leaders that excellent performance in process safety makes for perfect business sense.
The package comprises a set of introductory slides which can be edited and tailored to a specific context and a short film in DVD format, which uses the analogy of private aviation to underscore the importance of major accident safety.
The aim is that the package is delivered to a Board room audience by the corporate process safety champion who is then on hand to respond to explicit concerns which are raised during the presentation.
